Netflix ‘Squid Game’ Reality Show Leads to Medics Being Called Amidst U.K. Cold Snap

Date:

During the U.K.’s recent deep freeze, an episode of the Netflix ‘Squid Game’ Reality Show had to be cut short after several players became overwhelmed by the plummeting temperatures – resulting in medics being called on set!

After a chilly game of “Red Light, Green Light” on Monday’s episode of the reality show “Squid Game: The Challenge,” several contestants required medical attention due to the extreme cold temperatures throughout Britain.

Only five contestants on the set of Netflix’s new series reportedly needed medical attention. Unfortunately, one hurt their shoulder after an unfortunate incident with a wall, while other cases were deemed minor afflictions requiring minimal treatment and care.

456 contestants gathered to play the beloved childhood game, “Red Light Green Light,” or as some may call it, “Statues.” The goal of this classic is for players to reach a designated finish line without arousing suspicion from the individual who’s ‘it’ if you get caught in any form of motion – no matter how slight- you’re out! “Squid Game” featured a fantastic game as the centerpiece, in which an immense and murderous doll swiveled her head around to take out players who moved too much. It was the inaugural game on the show and particularly frightful because unsuspecting participants had no idea they’d be wiped out if they lost.

Bela Bajaria’s groundbreaking unscripted game show, first revealed in June 2022, is adapted from the popular Korean drama that aired in 2021. Production companies Studio Lambert and The Garden have recruited 456 enthusiastic contestants from across the globe to participate in various captivating challenges based on activities featured in Korea’s beloved children’s games and alluring new ones! The ultimate victor will unlock an incredible $4.56 million (£3.7 million) monetary award!

Netflix was not so fortunate to start their production on an unseasonably cold Monday in the U.K., where temperatures dropped to 0°C at Bedford’s Cardington Studios, north of London. As they shot the game inside an old airplane hangar, there’s no doubt the cold temperatures outside would have made it a difficult and uncomfortable experience for those involved. Many of these players aren’t accustomed to British weather or what is required on set to be successful – but they provided them with thermal underwear and hand warmers, which may have helped alleviate some of that discomfort. Despite this aid, shooting in such frigid conditions could still be quite challenging.

The British tabloid The Sun, which first broke the news, interviewed former contestants of the show who they had eliminated. “Some people couldn’t move their feet because it was so cold,” the source told The Sun. “You could hear someone yell ‘medic,’ and the crew would rush on. We ended up standing there for 30 minutes between takes.”

Addressing the public, a spokesperson for Netflix declared: “We care deeply about the health and safety of our cast and crew, and invested in all the appropriate safety procedures. While it was very cold on set — and participants were prepared for that — any claims of serious injury are untrue.”

Given the magnitude of contestants involved, it would have been unlikely for producers to alter the show’s production schedule. The game “Red Light Green Light” was also an essential component to expedite and coordinate all participating. Variety understands that only a select few contestants make it to the next round. Thus Monday’s activity was crucial for production. With limited competitors progressing past the initial hurdle, every moment counts.
