Instagram Reverses Recent Changes After User Backlash

Instagram Has Reversed Recent Changes After a Dissatisfied User Backlash.

Full-screen feeds and recommended they did not receive posts well by the Internet.

After a wave of Internet criticism from customers, Instagram has now announced that it will dial down on some of the recent changes it has made to the social media platform, such as full-screen feeds and recommended posts. Full-screen feeds were initially trialed for selected users last month, but Instagram head Adam Mosseri states that people are frustrated with how the change disrupts the flow of their feed. Similarly, users were unhappy with how the recommended posts section showed up between peoples’ stories.

For suggested articles, Mosseri acknowledges that now the algorithms aren’t perfect, and so the number of postings you see in that area will be reduced at least temporarily. “When you discover something in your field that you didn’t follow before, there should be a high bar — it should just be great,” he remarked. “You should be delighted to see it. And I don’t think that’s happening enough right now.”

Just days after Mosseri himself acknowledged the dissatisfaction of Instagram users by posting a video on Twitter, where he stated that the platform would continue to support pictures but that a shift to the video was inevitable, Etsy has announced another change in direction. “I need to be honest: I do believe that more and more of Instagram is going to become video over time,” he explained. “We see this even if we do nothing…So we’re gonna have to lean into that shift.”

While the company is retreating from some of its recent modifications, it’s also clear that they will not be abandoned entirely. As for why we haven’t seen any significant changes in the last two years, Mosseri explains that the team wants to enhance the overall user experience with recommendation algorithms and full-screen feeds so those features may “start to grow again.”
