Jem and the Holograms director reveals he received death threats

The director of Jem and the Holograms is having a tough week. His new movie, Jem and the Holograms bombed in the box office and the director revealed that behind the scenes he was getting death threats from fans.

John M. Chu, the director of Jem and the Holograms, delivered a speech during the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles. Chu opened up the discussion by telling the audience that the movie flopped in the box office and it was extremely tough on him.

“So, this is a bit awkward only because I’m supposed to be here this morning talking about how great it is to be in the movie business — it’s so awesome — but currently, I don’t know if you’ve looked at box office numbers, this morning specifically, it hasn’t been the greatest,” Chu said. “So you might get some real shit today. (Laughs.)” [The Hollywood Reporter]

Jem and the Hologram “Death Threats”

Chu told the crowd that he has been working on the movie for nearly 10 years. But, he understood that fans of the 30 year old cartoon series weren’t to happy to see the movie adaptation of Jem and the Holograms. “I get fans sending me hate mail, I get death threats, I get racist remarks — it’s a really fun business,” he said. “Reviewers have been harsh, to say it lightly.”

It is important to point out that this is not John M. Chu’s first feature film. Chu has directed several Hollywood blockbusters including G.I. Joe Retaliation and Step Up 3D.

Jem and the Holograms Casting Call

Jem and the Holograms Flops

According to reports, Jem and the Holograms is only expected to make $1.2 million in the box office this opening weekend. That would make it the worst opening ever for a major studio feature film opening in at least 2,000 theaters.

Chu continues by saying “Yes, we only made the movie for five [million dollars], but it doesn’t get easy when you hear those [box office] numbers,” he continued. “I’ll probably get some texts along the way today saying it’s not going anywhere. (Laughs.) So this morning isn’t the best kind of day.”

Jem and the Holograms centers around Jerrica Benton played by Aubrey Peeples, her younger sister Kimber (Stefanie Scott) and her group of friends as they work hard to become the next pop superstars. But, critics were not too impressed with Jem and the Holograms.

According to the most recent Rotten Tomatoes poll, the movie has a current rating of 20%.

In fact, Georff Berkshire of Variety called the movie “watchable” but at the end of the day the movie is “A generally unremarkable tech package at least provides a modest showcase for costume designer Soyon An, makeup head Mary Klimek and hairstylist Vanessa Price, who come the closest to channeling the vibrant spirit of the “Jem” cartoons that originally made fans fall in love.”
