The acclaimed director James Gunn is taking the helm of Superman: Legacy, a film sure to captivate viewers everywhere.

Recently, James Gunn shared the exciting news on Twitter that he will bring DC Studios’ upcoming Superman: Legacy to life with his directorial efforts. Get ready for “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” of Gunn and Peter Safran’s exhilarating DC-inspired multiverse, brought to you by the upcoming film!

Last Autumn, Gunn revealed he was scripting a new Superman film for Warner Bros. Discovery! In the upcoming Superman: Legacy, Superman embarks on a journey of self-discovery as he attempts to reconcile his Kryptonian ancestry with his upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, as Clark Kent. Gunn emphatically declared that this tale would revolve around a Superman who is younger than forty.

In a poignant announcement tweet, Gunn revealed the details of his upcoming film and shared an intimate story about his bond with his dad. “I lost my Dad almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and film, and I wouldn’t be making this movie now without him.” He added, “It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique, fun, and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Gunn continued explaining his reasoning behind the upcoming film’s plot, commenting on how it centers “around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”

Kicking off the studio’s initial stage of its multiverse, this movie will open in theaters on July 11th, 2025.
