ThunderCats Project Continues

Wingard emphasized that he and co-writer Simon Barrett have been working diligently on the script. “We finished our last draft basically right when I was going into production on [Godzilla x Kong] and we just had to put everything on hold,” Wingard said. Despite the pause, he assured ThunderCats fans that the project is still very much alive.

“Right now we’re actively working on it again,” Wingard noted. “So whether that means that’s the next thing I do or [not], I’m not sure. But [ThunderCats] is definitely one of the top priorities I have right now in terms of working on a script.”

The Duo Behind the Project

Before this venture, Wingard and Barrett teamed up on various projects, including A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Guest, and Blair Witch. Their professional synergy also extended to the Godzilla x Kong screenplay. In tandem with ThunderCats, they’re developing a sequel to Face/Off, the action classic starring John Woo, Nicolas Cage, and John Travolta.

Wingard’s Love for ThunderCats

While the idea of a ThunderCats movie might be new to some, it has been in Wingard’s mind for a long time. Wingard confessed that he is a longtime fan of the original ThunderCats series and believes the project has been a dream come true. His love for the franchise extends back to his high school years when he devoted his entire tenth-grade year to write a 272-page-long ThunderCats screenplay.

Remembering ThunderCats

The original ThunderCats was a popular animated series that aired from 1985 to 1989. It followed the thrilling adventures of a team of cat-like humanoid aliens on a planet dubbed Third Earth. The script of the new movie is expected to maintain certain elements from the animated series while also incorporating fresh concepts from Wingard and Barrett.

In the end, fans of ThunderCats keenly await what Wingard and Barrett have in store for this adored narrative. The excitement surrounding this long-awaited film adaptation continues to build, and it’s safe to say that the film is highly anticipated. What remains to the audience now is to continually hope for the best as Wingard confirmed his continued support and development for the ThunderCats film project.
