HBO Puts a Hold on ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff, ‘Ten Thousand Ships’

Key Takeaways:

– HBO has put on hold Brian Helgeland’s Game of Thrones spinoff, Ten Thousand Ships.
– The show was set to revolve around Queen Nymeria, the warrior-queen who led the Rhoynar refugees to Dorne.
– The concept was likened to the biblical story of Moses.
– Helgeland insists that the project is not yet dead and could see a revival down the line.

The most recent addition to the Game of Thrones spin-off lineup, Ten Thousand Ships, encountered a setback as HBO suspended its development. The brainchild of Brian Helgeland, the revered director of L.A. Confidential and A Knight’s Tale, the project was set to delve into the epic tale of Queen Nymeria.

Taking Inspiration from Biblical Saga

In his exchange with Inverse, Helgeland described the spin-off as biblical in scope. The epic tale mirrors the story of Moses – from a land in turmoil, survivors set off in search of a new abode. In this retelling of sorts, Queen Nymeria replaces Moses, steering her people on a long, tortuous voyage toward a safer haven.

In a conversation with Inverse, Helgeland said, “Essentially, it was the story of Moses but swapping him out for Nymeria. Her country gets ruined, and her people are forced to live on the water, hence ‘Ten Thousand Ships’.

This group embarks on a perilous journey across a fictional Mediterranean, braving numerous challenges as they seek a new home. Queen Nymeria plays a vital role, trying to hold her people together in the face of mounting trials.

A Stalled Voyage

Rumors of Helgeland captaining a Game of Thrones spin-off had been brewing since 2017. The talented Amanda Segel joined the project in May 2021, and prospects seemed promising. However, HBO never gave the series an official green light, effectively grounding the concept in limbo.

Despite this setback, Helgeland remains optimistic about the epic saga’s future. He insists the project isn’t destined to gather dust and could see the light of day eventually.

Reflecting on Queen Nymeria’s journey, Helgeland paints a picture of a nomadic life aboard a vast floating city. Land excursions happen, but they’re usually short-lived. These voyagers always end up back on the water, driven by the relentless search for a home, their version of the promised land.

Glimmers of Hope

Despite its current status, the project’s future isn’t entirely bleak. Helgeland met with George R.R. Martin, the brain behind the franchise, and the best-selling author approved the concept.

Helgeland shared, “It was kind of like Ray Harryhausen’s Sinbad films mixed with ‘The Odyssey.’ In a way, Nymeria is Odysseus, but instead of a 12-person crew, she’s responsible for every citizen in this floating city-state.”

With HBO already banking heavily on its Game of Thrones content pedigree, the network seems cautious about oversaturation. Besides the upcoming House of the Dragon and The Hedge Knight, the cancellation of both Ten Thousand Ships and Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow spin-off may result from this caution.

Despite this, Helgeland remains positive about his project’s future, pointing out, “My work is still there if HBO wants to pick it up.”

Fans craving more Game of Thrones content can keep their hopes up – who knows what the future holds for Ten Thousand Ships? Sound off your thoughts in the comment section below and stay tuned for more updates.

The likelihood of Ten Thousand Ships setting sail again may seem dim for now, but in the world of Westeros, one never knows what surprises lay around the corner. After all, winter is always coming.
