What do We Know About Netflix’s ‘The Residence: Inside the Private World of The White House” TV Series? 

Netflix is teaming up again with Shonda Rhimes and her Shondaland production company to create The Residence, a “Hercule Poirot”–style murder-mystery set in the world’s most famous mansion: The White House.

Paul William Davies will write The Residence, described as an “American family drama” based on the Shonda Rhimes-penned book. His credits include Scandal, Betrayal, and For the People. The series will be part of Davies’ new Netflix overall deal and Shondaland.

In July 2018, Netflix announced that it had secured Kate Anderson Brower’s book rights. In March 2022, it revealed it was developing the adaptation.

What’s the story behind The Residence?

The television series The Residence will use Kate Andersen Brower’s book, The Residence: Inside the Secret World of the White House, as a take-off point to turn it upside down and provide a mystery murder in the style of Agatha Christie’s Poirot. The series is “a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.”

One of the streamers has also specified the following key aspects: “132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective. One disastrous State Dinner.” The excessively odd detective appears to be strongly influenced by Poirot as well.
