According to reports, Netflix is looking for new ways to prevent household sharing of passwords. Others will have to pay a reduced rate to increase the account in Netflix.
On Wednesday, Netflix revealed that it is trying new strategies to prevent household passwords from being shared on its platform, including a new function that will request users to pay an additional fee.
“While [separate profiles and multiple streams] have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared,” Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix, said. “As a result, accounts are being shared between households — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”
In other countries like Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, Netflix will begin conducting its first tests, in which subscribers will be informed about the possibility of increasing their account’s number of viewers for a reduced rate: 2,380 CLP in Chile, 2.99 USD in Costa Rica, and 7.9 PEN in Peru. In addition, subscribers in the areas mentioned above will be able to migrate viewing profiles into a new account or an Extra Member account, which would preserve a user’s viewing history and My List.
“We’ll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world,” Long confirmed.
