ABC Calls ‘The Muppets’ a Major Disappointment

Date:

ABC President calls for major changes to The Muppets TV reboot.

Do you feel like you’re just not interested in the Muppets TV reboot on ABC? Well you are not alone. The mixed reception by critics has indicated that the Muppets series is in trouble. And ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee didn’t hold back when speaking with the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, California. Variety reports that Lee revealed that the show was not up to par and was a disappointment. ““The show itself didn’t quite feel it had the joy and the laughter and the heart that it should have,” Lee said.”

I suppose that it would be tough to promote a Muppets TV series as a comedy when it’s filled with cheating and scandalous romances.  ABC is hoping to fix the problem as it replaces the show’s showrunner. In fact, series co-creator Bob Kushell is no longer working on the show and now Galavant producer Kristin Newman is in charge. Lee is pretty focused on fixing this Muppets problem and taking the show in a direction. “We’ve done some fantastic scripts going forward,” he said at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We have very high hopes for them and hope [the episodes are] going to be as good as the scripts were.”

Newman has shared that she felt the show needed “more heart, more zaniness” injected into it when she showed up on her first day. But, it seems like antics will be increased when The Muppets return to ABC next month.

But, there are other changes outside of a new show runner, the Muppets will have a new human villain before season one is over. The Mindy’s Project’s Utkarsh Ambudkar will ruin everyone’s life as the new branding executive who has major changes in mind.

It is important to point out that the show started doing well. But, the ratings quickly diminished over time. In fact, over the course of a few episodes The Muppets lost nearly 40% of their premiere viewers.
