We’re seeking actors, dancers, performers, writers, et al, for an upcoming performance art production, Our Game Our Gold, which will take place at 7pm on May 30th and 31st, with a mandatory dress rehearsal on the 29th, also at 7pm.
OUR GAME OUR GOLD will pit two chess masters against each other for a one-hour live chess tournament in a performance space in Gowanus, Brooklyn.
Human chess pieces will be divided into two teams: shirts vs. skins. Each “player” will wear sporty clothing & accessories–e.g. yoga pants, jerseys, sports bras, tearaway pants, etc–and specific chess pieces will wear additional signifying gear. (Pawns: sit on an exercise ball; queen: boxing gloves; rook: swimcap & goggles; bishop: tennis gear and racket; king: baseball gear)
Though this sounds ridiculous, we’ll be approaching it with sincere seriousness. This is not a parody of sport. It is sport. Sport is performance. An NFL quarterback “acts” as if what he does “matters,” and millions of people are convinced. His performance is so real, the illusion so encompassing, that the audience forgets they are watching performance.
When each player “dies”, they will perform a 30 second dying sequence on a yoga mat, in the spotlight, with an accompanying soundtrack (should they wish). For these sequences, you may breakdance, perform a monologue from Hamlet, anything you like. Think of it as a touchdown dance in which you die at the end. Our director may work with you to tweak your original idea, but the idea needs to be your own: your own personal interpretation of the intersection of sport & performance.
To audition, propose a “yoga mat dying sequence”. You may do this by simply describing your death sequence, sending audio, video, or photos, whatever you think we need to understand your proposed sequence. Please specify if you’d like to audition for a specific chess piece, too.
At the moment, this is a volunteer position. I will be providing food and drink at the rehearsal and performances and will also provide any gear you may need.
