What You Should Know About Networking in the Film Industry

Build networking relationships faster by sharing secrets.

If you want to succeed in Hollywood, you have to make connections. The best way to make new connections is by making new friends. You can achieve this by simply opening up and sharing secrets with someone you think will be valuable to your career.

Making friends and connections can be a weird process. You don’t want to come across as too needy, but you also ant to come across that you’re interested in getting to know them. A recent study led by psychology Professor Arthur Aron at Stony Brook University, pointed out that telling a secret to someone can help you pave the way to building a connection and a friendship much faster than normal. In the study researchers found evidence that points out that building a relationship can be sped up by moving past small talk and using self-disclosure to build trust and understanding.

Now, it is not in your best interest to a stranger your deepest, darkest secrets. You just want to open up and help them see you as a person, especially if you can share something that relates to your career goals and dreams. For example, admit you’ve never had a speaking line on a TV show, or you have a bad acting experience that you wish you could forget. They’ll feel like you trust them and will be more likely to open up as well. The next time you meet someone you seem to get along with, share a secret about something relatable to your career and perhaps this new connection will help launch your career.
