The Best Way to Get Over Feeling Nervous in Auditions

How to deal with anxiety and stress before your audition

Auditions are tough. You have casting directors critiquing every move that you are doing, every inflection of your voice and even the clothes that you are wearing. Usually the best way to overcome audition anxiety is to prepare themselves for success. It first begins by working on lines and getting plenty of sleep. But, many people can still get overcome by anxiety.

Actress Amy Poehler from “Parks and Recreation” opened up about being an actress and how she still deals with anxiety. “I think it’s glorious to be nervous. Being nervous is great! How often do we get nervous on a daily basis? Being slightly nervous means you care, and you’re alive, and you’re taking some kind of risk. Hooray for being nervous! A friend told me to substitute the word ‘excitement’ for ‘nervous’. That way you acknowledge the physical feelings without putting a negative spin on things. So to answer your question, sometimes I still get so excited about ‘Update’ that I want to throw up.”

At the end of the day, use it. The anxiety, the frustration, the energy that goes along with it. Once you accept it you can use it in your performance. At first it will be hard to do but once it works, you will be prepared every time after that.
