Black-ish is an American sitcom TV series created by Hollywood producer Kenya Barris. Premiering in 2014, ABC has kept the series on for seven seasons. 

What is the show about?

Black-is centers around an upper-middle-class African-American family led by Andre ‘Dre’ Johnson and Rainbow Johnson, played by Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross. Viewers follow their family lives as they juggle political, social, and personal issues. The show also features Zoey Johnson, Andrew Johnson, Jr., Jack Johnson, and Diane Johnson, played by Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, and Marsai Martin.

Characters Josh Oppenhol (Jeff Meacham), Ruby Johnson (Jenifer Lewis), Charlie Telphy (Deon Cole), and Leslie Stevens (Peter Mackenzie) were upgraded to series regulars. Then, the character of Earl Johnson (Laurence Fishburne) makes recurring appearances.

Do people like the show?

The show has received multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. Actress Tracee Ellis Ross received a Golden Globe Award for Best actress and is ranked as one of the most-watched shows on ABC and the top ten for total estimated audience size in the United States. 

On May 21, 2020, ABC renewed the show for a seventh season, which premiered on October 21, 2020. 

Spin-offs:

The show’s success brought more success. The first spin-off, titled Grown-ish, stars Shahidi as her character travels to college. Mixed-is centers around a young Rainbow as she grows up in the 80s in a biracial family. It was announced a new spin-off starring Laurence Fishburne and Jennifer Lewis is coming soon.

Black-ish Cast:

  • Anthony Anderson as Andre “Dre” Johnson. Dre is a wealthy ad executive who wants to balance the black culture and the upper-middle class.
  • Tracee Ellis Ross as Dr. Rainbow “Bow” Johnson. The bow is an anesthesiologist and Andre’s wife, who wants to keep her place in her children’s lives.
  • Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson. Zoey is the oldest child. 
  • Marcus Scribner as Andre “Junior” Johnson Jr. Junior is the second oldest child. He is a tech-savvy underachiever.
  • Miles Brown as Jackson “Jack” Johnson. Miles is the third oldest child and fraternal twin of Diane. 
  • Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson. Marsai is the second youngest child and fraternal twin of Jack, who considers herself smarter and more mature than him and is Jack’s younger twin sister.
  • Deon Cole as Charlie Telphy. Charlie is Dre’s unorthodox co-worker and best friend. 
  • Jenifer Lewis as Ruby Johnson. Ruby is Andre’s mother, who does not get along with Rainbow. She is laboriously religious and pro-black on issues.
