NEW YORK - MAY 29: Jaden Smith, Willow Smith, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Trey Smith attend the premiere of "After Earth" at the Ziegfeld Theatre on May 29, 2013 in New York City.

Will Smith explains how counseling and therapy saved his marriage

Will Smith has opened up for the first time revealing that his relationship with his wife was on thin ice and it was saved by counseling.

Will Smith recently told the press how the couple nearly got divorced and sought therapy in order to save their marriage.

He explained: “I’ve done a lot of marriage counseling.” Smith added, “What happens in a marriage once you do counseling, the truth comes out. And you sit across from your wife and you’ve said all of your truth and she has said all of her truth. You look at each other and you can’t imagine you could ever possibly love each other again now the truth is out.”

Smith continued by saying, “It creates a dark moment. But for me it’s the dark before the dawn. When the truth comes out and people have to say who they are and what they think, you get to know who they are. I think that’s the cleansing before you get to the other side that is understanding and moving forward in our relationship.”

The couple have been married for 19 years after meeting on set of Will Smith’s hit TV series Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The couple has two children Jaden and Will Smith, who are still teenagers.

Jada Pinkett Smith addressed comments of a troubled marriage when she told Howard Stern, “I’m not his watcher. He’s a grown man … I trust that the man that Will is is a man with integrity. He’s got all the freedom in the world … and as long as Will can look himself in the mirror and be OK? I’m good,” she said.
