Projected Box Office Success for Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’

Disney’s highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid” is set to make a splash at the box office during the Memorial Day Weekend. Projections indicate that the film will make a substantial $100 million within its first three days of release across 4,300 theaters in North America. As reported by Variety, industry experts expect the film’s earnings to soar to approximately $120 million to $125 million by the holiday on Monday.

If “The Little Mermaid” meets these expectations, it will join the ranks of only four films this year to cross the $100 million mark in their opening weekends. Notably, it will be the third Disney film to achieve this feat, following “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($118 million) and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($106 million). The highest opening figures for 2023 currently belong to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which garnered USD 146 million.

“The Little Mermaid” carried a significant budget of nearly $250 million, partly due to COVID-related delays and additional production costs. In order to turn a profit, the film will also need to capture international audiences. Key global markets are projected to contribute approximately $80 million to the film’s opening weekend earnings.

Staying true to Disney’s recent trend of live-action adaptations, “The Little Mermaid” features an all-star cast. Halle Bailey takes on the role of Ariel, with Jonah Hauer-King portraying Prince Eric. Melissa McCarthy brings the iconic villain Ursula to life, while Javier Bardem portrays King Triton. The film also stars Art Malik as Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.

Fans can dive into “The Little Mermaid” on May 26 and revisit the official trailer to taste the enchanting film.
