Matt Reeves, the director of “The Batman,” has said he doesn’t think he could make a good Marvel movie.

Ahead of the highly anticipated release of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, the director sat down with Variety to discuss how he came about the project and how he shot the film during the lockdown.

With only three-quarters of The Batman left to film, Robert Pattinson’s star Caped Crusader tested positive for COVID-19 during filming. COVID had caused worry that the team would lose another crucial player when dialect coach Andrew Jack died at 76 in late March 2020. Despite the disease’s effects, Reeves was on track to make his DC Comics debut. The film currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, giving fans hope for what lies ahead. Even if Reeves has achieved a certified fresh rating, it does not negate that he feels he would still be unable to make a good Marvel film.

In the interview, Reeves said, “I have such respect for Kevin Feige and also for the [Marvel] filmmakers.” He then candidly added, “But to be honest with you, I just don’t know how I would make my way through that. There has to be some level of discovery for me, where I have some freedom to find my way. If I have to come into something that’s already set too firmly, then I think I would get lost. And I don’t think they would be happy with me either.”

Following the release of The Batman, Reeves considered quitting acting in favor of directing. He explained that Warner Bros. kept calling him about taking over the next Batman movie, to which he was becoming irritated. Of course, with The Batman’s imminent debut, Reeves subsequently met with the studio, and things changed. Reeves is also currently overseeing Gotham PD and The Penguin on HBO Max.

The Batman will be released in theaters on March 4.
