Apple has given a straight-to-series order to the project, which will be written by the executive produced, and co-showrunner by Fitzgerald and Martinez. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Martinez impressed Apple, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television with his “exciting-take” take on the material.

THR’s sources say that the live-action series has been in the works for years under Bad Robot’s overall deal with Warner Bros. The project came to Apple “some time ago,” and although its progress has been “excruciatingly slow,” it is now being developed at Apple.

The titular auto racer, Speed Racer (Tatsuo Yoshida), and his sacred vehicle, which was created by him in the 1960s and adapted into an anime series in the following decade, follow one another in this manga. He eventually reunites with his family, including his dad Pops Racer, his younger brother Spritle, and older brothers, Rex Racer and Brawn. The original series aired for more than 50 episodes.

The new live-action “Speed Racer” film from Apple is based on the popular Japanese cartoon. It will be the second live-action adaptation following a 2008 film directed by The Wachowskis that starred Emile Hirsch in the titular role.
