NBCUniversal is going to reboot the Shrek franchise.

NBCUniversal is looking to reboot the Shrek franchise and make as many as “four animated movies a year,” the company’s CEO Steve Burke told investors today.

Deadline reports, that NBCUniversal CEO’s goal is to create popular characters and then sell licensed merchandise and theme park attractions. NBC Universal plans to take “the low-single digit returns of the movie business and turn it into a different kind of business.”

Comcast’s NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks animation for $3.8 billion last April. This put Chris Meledandri, who worked as a produce on the Despicable Me movies, in charge of the company’s creative vision. “He is creatively going to try to help us figure out how to resurrect Shrek and take a lot of the existing DreamWorks franchises and add value as we create new franchises.”

NBCUniversal is working on creating more movies for Chinese audiences, Burke said. Universal “routinely sees films do more business in China than in the United States,” which pays off at Chinese theme parks as well. “The city of Beijing has said, ‘Well, Shanghai is Disney and Universal is Beijing.’ They basically cleared the land 10 years ago, and it’s going to be an important part of our company.”
