Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, several prominent Hollywood productions, including Disney/Marvel’s Deadpool 3, face temporary halts as they shoot outside the United States. The strike has disrupted filming schedules and release dates for these projects.

One of the affected productions is Deadpool 3, a Marvel Studios venture featuring Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, and Matthew Macfadyen, with direction by Shawn Levy. The movie, which was being filmed at Pinewood Studios in the UK and later in Norfolk, has encountered a pause in its production. Notably, Disney decided to bring forward the release date from November 8, 2024, to May 3, 2024.

Similarly, Paramount’s Gladiator 2, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Connie Nielsen, has also experienced a pause due to the strike. The movie was in the middle of shooting in Malta after completing a production segment in Morocco. Despite being more than halfway through production, Gladiator 2 will now wait until the strike concludes before continuing. The film’s anticipated release date is set for November 2024.

Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part Two, a joint production by Paramount and Skydance with a scheduled release in June 2024, has suspended its filming until the strike ends. This action was taken even though the first installment is currently premiering worldwide and has garnered an impressive $63.6 million in earnings. The pause allows for a promotional window for the film’s cast, including Tom Cruise and director/co-writer Christopher McQuarrie.

In the realm of Sony/Marvel’s Venom 3, the production, which began filming in Spain last month, has been put on hold. Notable cast members include Tom Hardy, Juno Temple, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. A release date for the movie has yet to be determined.

The SAG-AFTRA strike, initiated following failed negotiations between the actors’ union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), has caused this upheaval within the industry. Not all US actors participate in the strike, as this decision depends on their contractual obligations and the nature of the production. The strike’s impact is primarily directed toward studio and streaming platform shoots.

A distinct example is the ongoing filming of The Watchers in Ireland, starring Dakota Fanning. Despite the strike, this project continues production in Wicklow before moving to Galway. The Watchers, directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, features Dakota Fanning alongside UK actor Georgina Campbell and Irish-born Olwen Fouéré. The film is collaborative between production companies Blinding Edge Pictures, Inimitable Pictures, Warner Bros Discovery-owned New Line Cinema, and Irish production company Element Pictures.
