Ryan Lochte and several Olympic swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in Rio.

The excitement for the 2016’s Summer Olympics swimming is coming to an end. Lochte is the second most decorated male Olympic swimmer in history, with Michael Phelps standing between him and the number one spot. In fact, Lochte leaves Rio Olympics at 12-time medalist (six gold, three silver, three bronze). But, on Sunday the Rio Olympics became a hostile and frightening place as Team U.S.A swimmer Ryan Lochte was robbed by a group of people carrying guys and knives, his mother Ileana Lochte told USA Today and later confirmed by U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky.

Sandusky reportedly said that the team had left the French Olympic team’s hospitality house and was headed for the athlete’s village when the robbery took place. Sandusky commented, “The taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings,” adding that the four swimmers are “safe and cooperating with authorities.”

After the robbery Lochte texted his mom what happened and assured her he was okay. ”I think they’re all shaken up. There were a few of them,” Lochte’s mom told USA Today. “They just took their wallets, and basically that was it.”

This news comes after videos have gone viral allegedly showing kids attempting to rob tourists at the Olympics. In the video you can see young thieves targeting unsuspecting tourists. And while we cannot confirm the legitimacy of this viral video, it does go to show that anyone can become a victim if they are not careful.
