Rainn Wilson, renowned for portraying Dwight Schrute on NBC’s beloved series The Office, recently opened up about his experience on the show, revealing that he spent a significant portion of his time feeling “mostly unhappy.”

In a candid conversation on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, the actor shared his aspirations of becoming a movie star and how being part of the immensely successful show wasn’t fulfilling enough. “When I was on ‘The Office,’ I spent several years feeling largely dissatisfied because it just wasn’t sufficient,” Wilson admitted. “Looking back now, I realize that I was part of a hit show, consistently nominated for Emmys, earning a substantial income, collaborating with talented individuals like Steve Carell, Jenna Fischer, and John Krasinski, and working alongside exceptional writers and directors such as Paul Feig. I was on one of the greatest TV shows ever, adored by audiences. Yet, I couldn’t fully appreciate it. Instead, I questioned why I wasn’t a movie star like Jack Black or Will Ferrell. Why didn’t I have a thriving film career? Why hadn’t I secured a development deal?”

Wilson elaborated, “While on ‘The Office,’ I desperately grasped for more. Even though I was earning hundreds of thousands, I yearned for millions. I was a recognized television star, but my heart desired the status of a movie star. Nothing seemed to be enough. It’s intriguing how the human species, throughout its existence, has been driven by this ‘never enough’ mentality.”

During his tenure as Dwight, Wilson garnered three Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. As part of The Office ensemble, he also received multiple Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations and secured several wins.
