Netflix released the first teaser trailer for The Pale Blue Eye, an American horror mystery film set in 1830 at the United States Military Academy, West Point. Former detective August Landor (played by Christian Bale) was enlisted to investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet. To help him with the case, Landor partners with a young Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling), who grows up to become one of America’s most renowned short-story writers and poets.

2007’s novel by Louis Bayard is the film’s basis, with Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) as its director. Bale also produced and starred in The Pale Blue Eye, marking a reunion between him and Cooper, who have already worked together on two other movies. Lucy Boynton, Gillian Anderson, and Robert Duvall co-star alongside Bale.

“I thought, ‘OK, I have an opportunity to do three things with this film: Fashion a whodunnit, a father and son love story, and then a Poe origin story,” Cooper said in an interview with Vanity Fair. “Poe, at this young age, was quite warm and witty and humorous and very Southernly. The experiences that I’m putting forth in this film led him down the darker paths that we have come to know him for.”

The Pale Blue Eye is set to release in theaters on December 23 and come to Netflix on January 6.
