‘The Lord of the Rings’ TV Series May Be Coming Soon

The Lord of The Rings could become the next Game of Thrones TV series.

Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of discussions for a potential TV series based on the J.R.R. Tolkien best-sellers. Amazon Studios has emerged a potential buyer, according to THR.

Sources close to the news outlet says that a deal for a Lord of The Rings TV series is not yet official. That said, talks are being set on rights issues with the production and the production has not even started looking for a writer for the series.

This comes after an $80 million Tolkien estate lawsuit against Warner Bros. over profit participation from the feature film franchise.

Following J. R. R. Tolkien‘s sale of the film rights for The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in the late 60s, rock band The Beatles considered a corresponding film project and approached Stanley Kubrick as a potential director; however, Kubrick turned down the offer, explaining to John Lennon that he thought the novel could not be adapted into a film due to its immensity.

The film series was directed by Peter Jackson and is considered to be one of the biggest film projects ever undertaken, with an overall budget of $281 million, the entire film series took eight years, with filming for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in New Zealand.

The series was received with overwhelming praise and was a major financial success, with the films collectively being among the highest-grossing film series of all time. The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30 total Academy Award nominations. The final film in the series, The Return of the King, won all 11 of its Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.
