Critics Bash Jennifer Lawrence’s New Movie ‘Joy’: It’s the “Worst”

Jennifer Lawrence may want to stay away from Twitter, the TV, and any news outlet, as critics are calling her new movie Joy the worst movie her career.

Joy, centers around a family across four generations. But mostly on J Law, as she becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty. Facing major obstacles, Joy becomes a true boss of her family and business enterprise in a world of commerce. She makes friends and enemies as this movie features Jennifer Lawrence, with Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Edgar Ramirez, Isabella Rossellini, Diane Ladd, and Virginia Madsen. Like David O. Russell’s previous films with Jennifer Lawrence, Joy is supposed to highlight family and friendship.

Despite having Hollywood’s highest paid actress and several Academy Award winning actors, critics are bashing Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie saying “Joy is joyless, and easily David O. Russell’s worst film.”

Think we’re lying? Here are just a few reviews of Joy.

“It’s the kind of movie where it means nothing that our heroine hits rock bottom, because she fixes everything in the very next scene.” – The Wrap

“The mop is miraculous. David O. Russell’s latest movie, not so much.” – Variety

” There’s a good movie in there somewhere. Static and dreary, the muddled storytelling offers little cohesion. Jumping from one set piece to the next, “Joy” is just forceful rather than reflective.” – AwardsCircuit.com

Joy is currently rated 50% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes but, a staggering 97% of all people, according to the website, are interested in seeing the movie.

But, it wasn’t Jennifer Lawrence’s acting that ruined the movie. As The Verge points out, Lawrence was firing at all cylinders.

“Lawrence emotes despair, rage, depression, determination, and hope effectively throughout the film, but Joy never seems to be telling an emotional story, so much as it’s stringing bits of mythmaking incident together to mechanically get its central figure from underdog status to a top-dog position.”

In Hollywood, where you are only as good as your last movie, this may dampen Jennifer Lawrence’s heat streak. However, with movies such as Hunger Games still dominating in the box office, don’t expect Lawrence’s career slowing down anytime soon.
