Sony announces ‘Jump Street’ spinoffs and ‘Men in Black’ crossover movies.

Sony Pictures pan on growing the popular ‘Jump Street’ franchise. According to reports, Sony has hired “Broad City” writers to write one of two scripts that will take the series in a new direction. Reports suggest that producers plan on a crossover movie with “Men in Black”, an idea that was originally outlined in the leaked Sony Hack emails.

‘Broad City’ writers plan on creating a more female-driven spinoff, which will feature the same type of comedy scene in “21 Jump Street”.

“Movie Universes” are a big deal in Hollywood. With the Marvel Universe, DC Comics Universe, and now the expanding Sony Pictures Universe, Hollywood executives are moving characters from one particular feature film and placing them in a completely unrelated feature film franchise.

21 Jump Street is  action comedy film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, executive produced by and starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, and scripted by Michael Bacall from a story by him and Hill. 21 Jump Street was based on the 1987 television series of the same name by Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh, the film follows two police officers who are forced to relive high school when they are assigned to go undercover as high school students to prevent the outbreak of a new synthetic drug and arrest its supplier.

’21 Jump Street’ both a critical and commercial success. A sequel, titled 22 Jump Street, was released on June 13, 2014 and the film received generally positive reviews, and has earned over $331 million at the box office.

But it begs the question, who should star in the female-driven ’21 Jump Street’ spinoff? Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) actually played one of the young officers in ’21 Jump Street’ so, it is possible that the young actress could star in the upcoming spinoff.

As for the “Men in Black” crossover, it is unclear whether Will Smith would be involved, let alone Tommy Lee Jones or Josh Brolin.
