‘Indiana Jones 5’ director Steven Spielberg drops out of the franchise.

Variety reports Steven Spielberg will not direct the upcoming ‘Indiana Jones 5’ movie for Disney. Steven Spielberg’s departure is the first time another director will take over the franchise in the film’s 39-year-old history.

Disney is reportedly considering ‘Ford V Ferrari’ director James Mangold to replace Spielberg. It is essential to note this is not the first time Mangold has been hired to direct a major franchise film. He was hired for 20th Century Fox’s ‘Wolverine’ series in 2011 to direct the sequel to 2009’s ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’. Mangold stuck around to write, direct and produce the Academy Award-nominated ‘Logan’ feature film.

Spielberg will stay on as an executive producer on the project and will be involved in the production. Spielberg’s decision to step down from the franchise was to give a new perspective for a younger generation. That said, Harrison Ford is still attached to the project, stating recently he was “going to start doing Indiana Jones in about two months” on CBS Sunday Morning.
