How Much do TV Writers Make?

Ever wonder how much TV writers make?

A TV Writer is a job that many people think they could do, but few are given the opportunity, and very few can do a great job at it. Nowadays, landing a gig as a TV writer is a coveted position and it is not that easy, but once you got it, the pay is pretty good as well!

According to Huffington Post, TV stars Ashton Kutcher and Sofia Vergara make a nearly $700,000 to $175,000 per episode. But, according to the Writers Guild of America, a staff writer with a contract earns about $3,703/week and upper staff writers earn about $6,036/week.

A typical series produces 22 episodes so a staff writer earns about $96,000 a season, while a higher level writer makes $157,000.

What writers make will seem paltry compared to what TV stars Ashton Kutcher andSofia Vergara (who command a reported $700,000 and $175,000 an episode, respectively) rake in.

Keep in mind those are just the minimum rates. Showrunners with major hits are able to negotiate well above the minimums. For example, the creator of ‘Mad Men’, Matthew Weiner, earned about $25 to 30 million dollars a season.
