Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’ Season 5 to Film in Baltimore

Date:

Netflix’s House of Cards season 5 will film in Baltimore, Maryland.

According to reports, Netflix has confirmed that Kevin Spacey’s political drama House of Cards will stay in Maryland to film their fifth season. The streaming platform revealed the news to Baltimore Sun.

House of Cards centers around the ruthless politician Francis Underwood and his wife and partner-in-crime Claire. The show has been based in Baltimore since the first episode, largely doubling for the city of Washington, DC. Maryland offers filming incentives for both film and TV shows, with TV producers able to access a tax credit of up to 27%.

Although the tax credit is pretty generous, Maryland’s annual film fund is actually pretty small with only $7.5 million dollars tax fund. In fact, Media Rights Capital, the production company behind House of Cardsdelayed production while producers negotiated a new deal to keep the show in Baltimore.

“In the economics of today’s Hollywood, that’s pretty much the first question that comes out of a producer’s or a studio executive’s mouth when they call Maryland: What are the film incentives?” said Jack Gerbes, director of the Maryland Film Office, in comments to the Baltimore Sun.

The fourth season of House of Cards launches on Netflix on March 2016.

Kevin Spacey will reprise his role of Francis Underwood in season 5 of House of Cards, but the series will appoint a new showrunner after the departure of the show’s creator Beau Willimon.

Baltimore has quickly become a popular photo double for Washington, Dc, and also hosted the award-winning political comedy series Veep until the show was approved for Los Angeles film tax credits.
