Director and actor Harold Ramis, known for the films Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day has passed away at 69.

Harold Ramis passed away of an autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rar disease that causes the blood vessels to swell, according to the BBC.

The star became famous in his role of Egon Spengler the ghost-hunter in the 1984 franchise hit in 1984.

But his talents extend further than hunting ghosts, Ramis was also a talented writer and director, who worked on projects such as Caddyshack and Animal House.

“His creativity, compassion, intelligence, humour and spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him,” said his family in a statement.

The star had reportedly been quiet about his illness, which dated back to 2010.
