Don’t Expect Pilot Seasons for FOX Networks – “RIP Pilot Season”

FOX Network’s Chairman Kevin Reilly announced at the Television Critics Association press tour that the network is done with pilot season.

In an quirky way, Kevin Reilly laid to rest to pilot season with three words, “RIP pilot season”.

Reilly said in the opening comments on Monday, that the current scheduling and pilot procedure is no longer nowadays. “It’s nothing short of a miracle that talent is able to produce anything of quality in that environment.

Fox said that they will be ordering new shows throughout the year. Instead of pilots, they will focus on picking up series rather than just ordering pilots and producing them on a wider schedule as well.

With the recent success of “The Following” and “Sleepy Hollow”, Reilly has concentrated on creating series with less episodes per season.

Fox has always shown support for many of their shows in comparison to other networks.

But, Reilly’s decision may be warranted, many critics have commented with changes in the way people watch television that changes in production was necessary.

Will this set the trend of fewer open auditions, open casting calls, and series that never make it past their first episode? Which network will follow behind FOX’s footsteps?
