‘Doctor Strange’ Director Confronts Whitewashing Controversy

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson addressed the controversy about giving Asian roles to white actors, and it’s pretty amazing.

After it was announced that Tilda Swinton would play the traditionally Asian “Ancient One”  character in the upcoming Marvel Studios movie, many actors, models and Asian Americans were infuriated and in a matter of a few days #WhiteWashedOut started going viral.

But, in a tweet sent Wednesday, Derrickson addressed the controversy responding by saying that he’s listening. “Raw anger/hurt from Asian-Americans over Hollywood whitewashing, stereotyping & erasure of Asians in cInema. I am listening and learning,” he said.

While there is no word if Marvel plans on recasting the role of ‘Ancient One’, it is definitely encouraging to see a director acknowledging the controversy instead of suggesting excuses.
