In a recent episode of Jon Bernthal’s “Real Ones” podcast, David Ayer poured his heart out about the emotional toll Hollywood has taken on him, with “Suicide Squad” standing as his most profound disappointment.

Over the past few years, Ayer has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the 2016 theatrical release of “Suicide Squad,” asserting that it deviated from his original vision. Although the theatrical cut faced harsh criticism, Ayer believes the studio altered the film’s essence.

Ayer described Hollywood as a painful spectacle: “Hollywood — I tell people — is like watching someone you love get [expletive] by someone you hate.” He went on to pinpoint “Suicide Squad” as the primary source of his anguish: “That [experience] broke me. That handed me my defeat.”

Following his successful work on “Fury,” Ayer influenced the industry considerably. However, his optimism led him into the tumultuous journey of crafting “Suicide Squad.” He strived for authenticity, sincerity, and collaboration to create a profound cinematic experience. Unfortunately, the film landscape changed dramatically, especially with the success of “Deadpool.” Unforeseen shifts, like the untested waters of “Batman v. Superman” and scathing criticism, left the studio scrambling to alter the film’s direction. Ayer expressed dismay: “They decided to turn David Ayer’s dark, soulful movie into a [comedy].”

Ayer’s campaign to unveil his version of the film, known as the “Ayer Cut,” continues on social media. He recently shared that James Gunn, the new head of DC Studios, hinted at the Ayer Cut having its moment in the spotlight. While specifics remain scant, Ayer remains resolute. “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release,” he stated. He believes his version has genuine and organic interest and acknowledges that Gunn deserves a fresh start with his DC universe, free from past controversies. Ayer’s journey navigating this situation resembles riding a tiger, tethered to a unique and complicated situation.

Despite the critical backlash, “Suicide Squad” flourished at the box office, amassing a staggering $747 million worldwide and featuring stars like Will Smith and Margot Robbie’s debut as Harley Quinn, the film’s commercial success contrasted with its critical reception. In 2021, James Gunn helmed his version of “The Suicide Squad,” adding a new layer to the franchise’s evolution.
