Atlanta-Filmed ‘Triple 9’ Flops in the Box Office

Date:

Deadpool dominates in the box office as Triple 9 flops.

Deadpool once again dominated the box office despite a 45% drop, the Ryan Reynolds film earned $31.5 million and is the number one movie in the box office. So far the movie has earned over $600 million worldwide and if it’s international prospects continue, Deadpool could pass the record for the all-time worldwide R-Rated earning movie.

The harder record for Deadpool will be all-time domestic R-rated gross earnings as it has to earn another $100 million to match The Passion of the Christ’s $370 million record.

Next week, Deadpool’s fourth weekend will face strong family competition against (Zootopia), action competition (London Has Fallen), and comedy competition (Whiskey Tango Foxtrot).

Ultimately, it’s a certainty that Zootopia will break Deadpool’s #1 streak but it’s still up in the air what audiences the other two films could take from Deadpool.

Despite the success of Deadpool, Gods of Egypt flopped in the box office. The $140 million dollar budet movie brought in an abysmal $14 million opening weekend and $38.2 worldwide. The movie, which was supposed to start a new franchise for a post-Hunger Games Lionsgate, was bashed for whitewashing the cast and receiving horrible reviews which didn’t help the movie.

In an interesting story, Lionsgate revealed they only paid $10 million for the $140 million film due to various tax incentives and split costs with other production companies, so don’t expect this movie to actually hurt the studio.

The real failure comes in that Lionsgate doesn’t have anything to replace the already dying Divergent franchise. And now Lionsgate executives will have to go back to the drawing board to figure out what to do next.

Edie the Eagle, whose $6.3 million opening is the lowest earning movie of Hugh Jackman’s career who could always be counted to open a movie above $10 million. Clearly that expensive Super Bowl ad didn’t really help. However, in 1,000 less movie theaters than Gods of Egypt, it’s not that much of a surprise.

Meanwhile, the Atlanta filmed Triple 9 flopped the hardest in the box office. It was expected that Triple 9 would dominate the box office and at least beat Eddie the Eagle but, the movie only earned $6.1 million in the box office. With a C+ Cinemascore and middling reviews the film has tough audience reaction to overcome. While it will limp past its low $20 mil budget don’t expect this to be considered even a modest success when all is said and done.

Rank Title Domestic Gross (Weekend) Worldwide Gross (Cume) Week #
1 Deadpool $31,500,000 $609,805,905 3
2 Gods of Egypt $14,000,000 $38,200,000 1
3 Kung Fu Panda 3 $9,000,000 $314,232,594 5
4 Risen $7,000,000 $22,874,507 2
5 Eddie the Eagle $6,300,000 $6,300,000 1
