Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is dominating the box office.

Despite bad reviews, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice is dominating the box office and is on track for a $170 million U.S. box office weekend.

Zack Snyder’s PG-13 rated action movie earned a record setting $82 million in its first day in the U.S. box office.

That puts Batman v. Superman on track to deliver a record-breaking $170 million over the course of three days for Warner Bros. destroying negative reviews like kryptonite destroys Superman. From the Wrap:

Befitting its over-sized profile, the $250 million “Batman v Superman” got a huge boost from 3D, IMAX and Premium Large Format screenings. IMAX theaters alone delivered $9 million, or nearly 11 percent of the grosses.

This puts Batman v. Superman right behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which earned $119 million dollars on their first day.

Despite earning $82 million, Warner Bros. has to make $800 million to recoup their investment, according to Variety (emphasis my own):

With a production cost of at least $250 million and added global marketing costs easily topping $150 million, the movie would have to gross $800 million to recoup its investment, if it were reliant just on box office (though the film will also benefit from substantial TV, merchandising and other receipts). Studio insiders consider the $800 million figure inflated.
