Best Actors are Coming From Canada? Casting Directors Think So

Is Toronto the home of all future actors? Sandra Oh thinks so.

Recently, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Sandra Oh from Grey’s Anatomy and she commented on how many casting directors are interested in Canadian actors. According to the article, Toronto is hosting U.S. casting agents to see Canadian talent for upcoming Hollywood movies and TV shows that are set to film in Canada. “They want to know us as much as we want to know them, because Toronto and Vancouver is not that far [from Hollywood] and we’re from basically the same talent pool.”

The president of the Casting Society of America opened up and revealed that Toronto has a large pool of actors that are talented enough to compete in possible roles in several U.S. projects. “In two days, you can see ten movies and actors you don’t know,” Hicks said at a previous 2014 Rising Star showcase of local talent.

Currently, Toronto’s Rising Star program connects breakout Canadian actors with international casting directors and filmmakers to promote their acting careers. The 2014 Rising Stars in Toronto are Sophie Desmarais, Shannon Kook, Alexandre Landry and Julia Sarah Stone, a series regular on The Killing.

“It’s a way to let actors know it’s not just about your premiere. It’s a way to reach all the people that come here from around the world and connecting to them,” Gadon, whose film credits include A Dangerous Method, Cosmopolis and Enemy, added.
