7-Up Used to Have Lithium, a Mood Stabilizing Element

7-Up Used to Have Lithium in all of their sodas which was used as a Mood Stabilizing Element

7-UP used to contain Lithium. In an interesting article in The New York Times, Cornell medical school professor argued for adding lithium to our drinking water. But, what is extremely surprising is that Coca-Cola was not the only beverage that added drugs into their drinks. In fact, 7-up used to contain the mood medication into their sodas.

American history shows a true love for the mood-stabilizing element.

Lithium has been known for its curative powers for centuries, if not millenniums. Lithia Springs, Ga., for example, with its natural lithium-enriched water, appears to have been an ancient Native American sacred site. By the late 19th century Lithia Springs was a famous health destination visited by Mark Twain and Presidents Grover Cleveland, William Howard Taft, William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.

Currently, Lithium is used in higher doses to treat people with bi-polar disorder and reportedly helps prevent depression and lowering suicide rates.

It is not sure when 7-Up got rid of lithium from its recipe. But, it does given evidence as to why catering services on many movie and TV show sets would serve 7-Up like hot cakes to the crew and actors on set.
