NASA Releases Haunting Photo of the Sun Before Halloween

0

Newly released NASA photos show the sun shining with a scary and menacing jack-o’-lantern-like smile.

The image was taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) just before Halloween two years ago. The image actually shows active regions on the scary and coincidentally lining up to look like an evil face.

“The active regions appear brighter because those are areas that emit more light and energy — markers of an intense and complex set of magnetic fields hovering in the sun’s atmosphere, the corona,” NASA said of the orange and black photo in a statement.

The SDO is part of a fleet of sun-staring spacecrafts that help scientists gain data about the star. By tracking the star’s activity, researchers can predict dangerous weather such as solar flares and solar particles.

NASA updates that spacecraft’s webpage with new photos every day showing how our sun looks at any given moment, and it’s constantly changing.

It’s important to point out that the star’s atmosphere is always changing with dynamic fields breaking and reforming above the star.
