Game of Thrones final season will not air until 2019.

Game of Thrones fans will have to wait until next year to see what happens next in the HBO drama. HBO made the announcement on Thursday.

“‘Game of Thrones’ will return for its six-episode, eighth and final season in 2019,” the network announced via Twitter. “David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik will be the directors for the new season. Writers for the new season are David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill.”

HBO made it known last year that the series would end with Season 8. Season 7 ended with only seven episodes last August.

HBO programming president Casey Bloys said in September that the show is taking measures avoid revealing the show’s ending by shooting multiple endings.

“I know in ‘Game of Thrones,’ the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens,” Bloys said in a recording of his Moravian College speech released and first reported by The Morning Call.

“You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know,” he added. “They’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
