Why Did Elon Musk Change the Twitter Logo to the Dogecoin Cryptocurrency Meme?

What Inspired Elon Musk to Swap Twitter’s Logo with the Dogecoin Cryptocurrency Meme?

Elon Musk is now taking full advantage of Twitter’s platform to deliver clever (sometimes absurd!) jests.

On Monday, Twitter surprised everyone when the iconic bird logo over its home button on web-version was unexpectedly replaced with Dogecoin’s “Doge.” Although Twitter’s mobile applications remain the same, you may have noticed a Doge icon (featuring a Shiba Inu) in the Dogecoin blockchain and cryptocurrency logo. This hilarious parody was created as an ode to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin in 2013.

Last fall, Musk’s $44 billion purchase of Twitter solidified his reputation as a significant Dogecoin fan. Tweeting about it to hosting Saturday Night Live last year, the enigmatic entrepreneur has never shied away from expressing his love for the meme-inspired cryptocurrency. Others share his enthusiasm–after Monday’s change to Twitter’s logo, the value of Dogecoin experienced a significant surge in worth, rising more than 20%!

To explain the Doge logo modification on Twitter, Musk, currently, the world’s second-richest person, publicized a tweet Monday which read “As promised” – accompanied by a screenshot of an exchange he had in early March 2022 with @WSBChairman.

Just before his triumphant takeover of Twitter in March 2022, the world watched Elon Musk take to social media with a tweet that would set things into motion: “Given that Twitter serves as the de facto public town square, failing to adhere to free speech principles fundamentally undermines democracy. What should be done?” @WSBChairman had responded, “Just buy Twitter… and change the bird logo to a doge.” Musk responded, “Haha, that would be sick.”

In June 2022, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York filed a lawsuit against Musk, alleging that he had been associated with racketeering regarding his promotion of Dogecoin. This was not an intentional joke or lighthearted matter; it is severe and legally binding. On Friday, March 31st, Elon Musk’s legal team filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit against him. Changing his Twitter icon to Doge could be an attempt at trolling those who initiated litigation against him.

The plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk demanded an enormous $258 billion in damages, pointing to his ill-fated hosting gig on “Saturday Night Live” as evidence. During Weekend Update, Musk masqueraded as a financial specialist and proclaimed Dogecoin was nothing but a “hustle.”

In their filing, Musk’s legal team asserted that the plaintiffs, in this case, have failed to demonstrate how his support for Dogecoin was deceptive, nor did they describe any risks he allegedly concealed from stakeholders. “[T]here is nothing unlawful about tweeting words of support for, or funny pictures about, a legitimate cryptocurrency that continues to hold a market cap of nearly $10 billion,” the filing said. “Plaintiffs have had multiple opportunities to plead their claims adequately, but they are still unable to articulate any actionable theory. This court should stop the plaintiffs’ fantasy and dismiss the complaint.”
