After an extensive period of nearly 150 days, Hollywood studios have finally reached a preliminary accord with the Writers Guild of America for a fresh contract. Unless unexpected objections arise from WGA members, the writer's segment of the Hollywood strike is effectively concluded.
So, when can viewers expect their beloved shows to return to screens? And when will highly anticipated films resume production?
The concise response is as soon as feasibly possible. WGA members have consistently expressed their eagerness to reoccupy the writers' rooms. Concurrently, the studios, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in guild negotiations, have incurred significant financial losses during the strike and need prompt production revival to mitigate these losses.
However, specific prerequisites must be fulfilled before this revival can occur, commencing with the contract's ratification.
In the coming days, the precise terms of the deal will be formalized in official documentation. Subsequently, the WGA Negotiating Committee will conduct a vote to decide on recommending and transmitting the agreement to the guild's board for approval. This vote is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.
Following the acquisition of the contract, guild leaders will disseminate it among members for a ratification vote. While the guild has not disclosed a specific timeline for this vote, it must allow members sufficient time to scrutinize the contract before casting their votes.
It is worth noting that guild leaders may opt to lift the restraining order and conclude the strike on a specific yet undetermined date and time, pending ratification. According to the WGA, this would enable writers to return to work during the ratification vote without impeding the membership's right to decide on contract approval.
Writers are advised not to resume work until duly authorized by the guild.
Another factor adding complexity is the ongoing strike by SAG-AFTRA since July 13, which the WGA has pledged to support until its resolution.
As of the latest update, the actors' guild and studios still need to set a date for resuming negotiations. However, insiders suggest that recommencing talks with the actors has been a priority for some studios, especially when discussions with the WGA encountered obstacles.
Given that actors and writers struck for similar reasons, the guild will likely secure a deal on terms akin to the WGA at the earliest opportunity.
One of the final points of contention between WGA and AMPTP centered on safeguarding members who prefer to wait until SAG-AFTRA resolves before returning to work. Or, as articulated in a memo to WGA members in early August, to "honor other unions' picket lines as they have honored ours during this strike."
The specifics of the deal still need to be disclosed. Notably, the WGA suspended its picket lines on Sunday but encouraged members to join SAG-AFTRA pickets until the guild issues authorization to resume work.
Regarding late-night programming, the timeline remains somewhat uncertain, but viewers can anticipate figures like Meyers, Fallon, and Colbert to be among the first to resume work. These hosts were some of the quickest to halt production and could be among the first to restart. However, the exact timeline will be determined by each show. Nevertheless, in August, a knowledgeable source hinted that late-night shows could be operational within as little as two weeks.
Representatives for these programs have yet to respond to TheWrap's request for comment.
The scripted series will likely be the last to return to screens. While writers can begin crafting new scripts, television shows rely on actors to resume work. IN AUGUST, former NBC Studios president Tom Nunan suggested that the most optimistic scenario would be to have network shows back in production in January.
Insiders, however, posit that this timeline could be expedited. "Law &amp; Order: SVU" showrunner Warren Leight outlined a potential path on social media that would enable 13-episode seasons of scripted series to proceed if the strike concluded by October. Leight proposed that once hired, writers would require less than the customary five to six weeks lead time to initiate the season since they'd be producing only 13 episodes. Furthermore, he noted that if everyone agreed to a one-week Christmas break instead of the usual two weeks of unpaid leave, productions might manage to shoot five episodes before the new year.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also expressed optimism this month, affirming during an investor conference in early September that "as soon as these strikes are resolved, everybody is ready to get back to work."
Nonetheless, it should be underscored that SAG still needs to secure its deal. Without actors, no scripted series can recommence. Michelle Hurd, "Star Trek: Picard" actress and the Los Angeles VP of the actors' guild, elucidated in August that there was minimal likelihood of SAG reentering negotiations before the WGA resolved.
"The bottom line is that we can't go back into negotiations until they agree with the WGA," Hurd stated. "So this makes it, you know, as long as there's actual true good faith bargaining happening, then that path to us getting back is closer because they're at that table."

When Will Production Resume After WGA Deal?

With the Writers Guild's strike poised to conclude following a tentative agreement, attention now shifts to SAG-AFTRA. At the same time, IATSE and the American Federation of Musicians await their turns on the negotiation stage.
The subsequent contracts under scrutiny belong to the American Federation of Musicians: the Basic Theatrical Motion Picture and Basic Television Motion Picture Agreements, slated to expire on November 14. Negotiation dates with the AMPTP are pending.
Unlike the Directors Guild, which secured a contract without resorting to a strike on June 3, the WGA, engaged in a strike since May 2, rejected the industry's customary "pattern bargaining" practice, where the subsequent union in line typically mirrors the preceding deal.
With the WGA achieving terms arguably superior to the DGA after 146 days of picketing, SAG-AFTRA may view this agreement not as a strict pattern but as a foundational model. This framework could address many of SAG-AFTRA's demands, including enhanced wages, innovative streaming residual calculations, and protections against potential artificial intelligence-related abuses.
This juncture may be a fresh starting point when SAG-AFTRA's negotiations recommence. While the leaders expressed readiness to return to the table since the actors' strike commenced on July 14, SAG-AFTRA harbors unique concerns, such as minimum staffing and employment duration in TV writers' rooms, kept from the DGA or WGA contracts.
One pressing issue for actors pertains to self-taped auditions, which became widespread during the COVID-19 pandemic. SAG-AFTRA contends that these auditions lack regulation and oversight, posing an undue burden on performers' lives. They advocate for reasonable guidelines, broader access to alternative casting methods, and protections against exploitation.
Before the strike, both sides tentatively agreed to numerous self-taping rules, addressing technical requisites and other concerns. While SAG-AFTRA continues to push for further protections, these prior agreements could serve as a basis for future negotiations unless the companies adopt a rigid stance, dismissing them post-strike.
The WGA's success in mitigating potential AI abuses may provide a blueprint for SAG-AFTRA to tackle similar threats to performers. However, SAG-AFTRA asserts that the AMPTP failed to address critical concerns, potentially jeopardizing performers' roles adequately.
Finances, encompassing wages and residuals, remain challenging, with SAG-AFTRA advocating for an 11% pay increase in the initial contract year. Nevertheless, the prolonged work hiatus may have offset substantial portions of this increment.
After the actors' strike concludes, the AMPTP will face negotiations with IATSE in the coming year. IATSE members, who have stood in solidarity with striking actors and writers, have incurred significant losses in terms of wages and employer contributions to their pension and health plans. Whether this hardship will culminate in a more assertive stance or a reluctance to strike again remains uncertain.
In the interim, WGA members must ratify their new agreement. The Ellen Stutzman-led WGA negotiating committee is slated to vote on the agreement's recommendation for approval by the WGAW Board and WGAE Council in votes tentatively scheduled for Tuesday.
While the first casualties of the WGA strike, late-night comedy and daytime talk shows, are set to return promptly due to their exclusion from SAG-AFTRA's ongoing strike, films and scripted TV shows without Interim Agreements with SAG-AFTRA will remain in limbo until the strike's resolution.

<h2>SAG-AFTRA Extends Congratulations to WGA on Tentative Agreement, Calls on Studios to Resume Negotiations with Actors.</h2>
SAG-AFTRA, a staunch supporter of the writers throughout the WGA strike, wasted no time applauding the guild's recent achievement in securing a tentative deal.
In an official statement, the union affirmed its ongoing strike stance and urged the AMPTP to re-engage with the actors at the negotiating table to hash out the essential terms for its members.
"SAG-AFTRA commends the WGA for reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP following an impressive 146 days of unwavering determination and unity on the picket lines. While we anticipate reviewing the specifics of the WGA and AMPTP's tentative accord, we remain steadfast in our commitment to securing the requisite conditions for our members," the statement emphasized.
"From the inception of the WGA strike, SAG-AFTRA members have stood shoulder to shoulder with the writers on the picket lines. We continue our strike action under our TV/Theatrical contract. We strongly encourage the CEOs of studios and streaming platforms, along with the AMPTP, to return to negotiations and establish an equitable deal that our members rightfully expect and request."
This declaration comes amid the actors' 73-day strike period.
SAG-AFTRA initiated their strike on July 14, a fortnight after their contract lapsed on June 30. The union greenlit their strike authorization vote, securing an overwhelming 98% mandate, on June 5.
Discussions broke down on July 13, marking the first actors' strike against the film and TV industry since 1980. Although negotiations were ongoing, skeptics speculated that studios employed this tactic to afford specific Hollywood blockbusters more promotional lead time.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's National Executive Director and chief negotiator, consistently emphasized the union's readiness to return to the negotiating table with the AMPTP, which, throughout this process, has engaged exclusively with one party at a time.
"We've remained prepared, eager, and capable of continuing negotiations with them, and we sincerely hope the AMPTP will rejoin us at the table," he stated emphatically last month.

<h2>An alleged terrorist bomb plot on the 'Game of Thrones' set was stopped by police in Northern Ireland.</h2>
According to a new <a href="http://nypost.com/2015/03/11/irish-terrorists-planned-to-bomb-game-of-thrones-set-report/" target="_blank">report</a>, police actually had to stop an alleged bomb plot that was targeting a group of ex-cops who provide security on the Northern Ireland set of the HBO series.
<blockquote>Irish Republican terrorists planned to plant explosives in a bin next to a catering unit at the Paint Hall ­Titanic Studios in Belfast, where former Royal Ulster Constabulary cops providing security on set of the hit HBO show took their meals.

But an informant tipped off ­officials, and security was beefed up dramatically.

The bomb plot had been discovered months ago but kept quiet.</blockquote>
According to the Belfast Telegraph, the group responsible for the plot have not been identified and those targeted have been advised to increase their personal security.

<h2>Casting directors and producers for BBC 2's 'The Fall' are now seeking talent for an upcoming role in the series.</h2>

<div>The series is set in Northern Ireland and follows a PSNI investigation into a string of recent murders. When the PSNI are unable to close the case after 28 days, Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, of the Metropolitan Police, is called in to review the case. Under her new leadership, the local detectives must track down and stop the serial killer, Paul Spector, who is attacking young, professional women in the city of Belfast.</div>
