The Weeknd Addresses Criticisms of ‘The Idol’: Deliberate Choices Made

The Weeknd has responded publicly to the backlash surrounding The Idol, the ongoing HBO series he co-created with Sam Levinson. The show has faced heavy criticism, particularly regarding its use of misogynistic language and the unsettling nature of The Weeknd’s character, Tedros.

In an interview with GQ, the artist, and actor clarified that the discomforting moments in the series are intentionally designed to amplify the campy atmosphere. He explained that Tedros’ appearance and personality were specifically crafted to give him a peculiar persona. “However, there is nothing truly enigmatic or mesmerizing about him. We deliberately fashioned his appearance, attire, and hairstyle to portray him as a douchebag,” The Weeknd stated. “You can easily discern that he obsesses over his looks and genuinely believes he looks great. However, there are these strange solitary moments where he rehearses and calculates his actions. He needs to do that. Otherwise, he is left with nothing, appearing pathetic. This is true for many individuals who find themselves out of their element and thrust into unfamiliar circumstances.”

The Weeknd also addressed a viral sex scene from Episode 2 that garnered significant discussion on social media. He clarified, “There is nothing inherently sensual about it. When referencing Basic Instinct, we draw inspiration from Verhoeven, the master of ’90s satirical thrillers. Yes, his films have moments of ‘sexiness,’ but they also contain cheesy and comical elements.”

He further explained, “Regardless of the emotions evoked while watching that scene—discomfort, disgust, or embarrassment for the characters—these feelings collectively convey that this guy is way over his head. He finds himself in a situation where he doesn’t belong.”

In other entertainment news, there are rumors of BLACKPINK’s Jennie joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
