‘The Little Mermaid’ Draws 16M Views on Disney+

Disney+ Celebrates Success as ‘The Little Mermaid’ Makes a Splash with 16 Million Views.

Disney+ users have eagerly embraced ‘The Little Mermaid,’ according to an announcement by the streaming service on Monday.

In just five days since its release on Disney+ on September 6th, ‘The Little Mermaid,’ a live-action reinterpretation of the beloved 1989 Oscar-winning animated classic, has garnered an impressive 16 million views worldwide, as reported by the platform. To calculate these “views,” Disney uses a formula that divides the total viewing time of a title by its duration, which is the same method employed to gauge early streaming figures for the debut episode of the Star Wars series, ‘Ahsoka.’ (Netflix also relies on a similar formula for its weekly top 10 lists.)

This viewership figure signifies a significant level of interest in director Rob Marshall’s film, which premiered in theaters on May 26th and amassed over $560 million at the global box office. For comparison, ‘Hocus Pocus 2,’ released directly to Disney+ in October of the previous year, garnered more than 26 million views in its first three days, solely within the United States, according to Nielsen streaming data.

This announcement coincides with ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA efforts to advocate for residuals or revenue sharing based on viewership statistics from streaming platforms.

‘The Little Mermaid’ boasts an impressive cast featuring Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, Daveed Diggs, and Awkwafina. The film’s first full trailer, unveiled in March, generated a staggering 108 million global views within its initial 24 hours, spanning broadcast television and digital platforms. This marked a remarkable achievement, making it the most-watched Disney live-action title since 2019’s ‘The Lion King.’

In her review for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Lovia Gyarkye praised Halle Bailey’s performance in the lead role, stating that she “doesn’t disappoint.” Gyarkye also noted, “Like other live-action remakes, ‘The Little Mermaid’ presents a well-packaged story infused with themes of representation. It provides enough entertainment for an evening’s viewing but may not evoke much more than a sense of déjà vu.”
