Sam Esmail’s Metropolis Adaptation for TV Gets Canceled

Unfortunately, the highly anticipated TV adaptation of Fritz Lang’s iconic film Metropolis, helmed by Sam Esmail, won’t be coming to our screens. According to Deadline, the project has been scrapped due to the ongoing writers’ strike. Universal Cable Productions (UCP) cited the escalating costs and uncertainties associated with the strike as the primary factors behind this difficult decision.

Sam Esmail, renowned for creating the hit series Mr. Robot, had taken on the roles of writer, director, and executive producer for the UCP show, which was slated for release on Apple TV+. The production initially planned to begin filming in Australia during the upcoming summer, with a talented cast including Briana Middleton and Lindy Booth. However, the writers’ strike, which started on May 2, disrupted the completion of script drafts and show budgets. As the costs continued to rise with the indefinite postponement, UCP determined that the financial risks outweighed the potential benefits.

It’s deplorable, as the 1927 science fiction classic’s narrative revolves around replacing a human with a robot, aimed at quelling a group of oppressed workers’ uprising. The timely relevance of this theme in modern society could have made for compelling television. Alas, the impact of the writers’ strike has halted this promising project.
