Ratings for The Grammys Hit a Seven Year Low

Date:

Ratings for The Grammys hit a near decade low point.

While Kendrick Lamar gave an amazing performance for ‘Alright’ and Taylor Swift bashed Kanye West on live TV, people are just not that interested in the award ceremony of American pop stars.

A little more than 23.7 million people tuned in to watch Taylor Swift win Album of the Year on Monday night’s telecast of the 58th Annual Grammy Awards on CBS, which marks a 6.3% drop from last year’s total of 25.3 million, according to Nielsen.

And that number presumably includes online viewers, since CBS said last week that Nielsen would track viewers for the Grammys live stream and incorporate that information into their TV ratings.

The year-over-year ratings drop also means the late night’s show pulled in the lowest TV ratings since 2009, when only 19 million people watched the event.

Apparently fewer younger people are watching awards shows.

The event has also experienced a decline in terms of younger viewers

From Fortune:

More Nielsen numbers show that last night’s Grammys posted a rating of 16.1/25 in Nielsen’s metered markets. To explain, that rating means that 16.1% of all U.S. households watched the Grammys last night, while the show attracted a 25% market share of people who were actually watching TV last night. The event has also experienced a decline in terms of younger viewers, as last night’s show only attracted 7.4% of people between the ages of 18- and 49-years-old after the 2015 program pulled in 8.5%.

What’s interesting to point out is that the Grammy Awards were held on Monday night on purpose due President’s Day weekend as well as the fact that Valentine’s Day fell on a Sunday this year. While most awards show air on Sunday nights, CBS saw Monday as an opportunity to push back the event by one night.

People are not watching Awards shows any more.

The Grammys are not the only award show experiencing falling ratings in recent years, as the ratings for last year’s Academy Awards dropped 16%, which is bad news for the Oscars. The Grammys is the second most watched awards show behind the Oscars, and if the ratings plummeted for the Grammys expect the ratings for the Oscars to fall short as well.
