Netflix Officially Launches Paid Sharing in U.S., To Begin Blocking Users With Unauthorized Passwords

Netflix Introduces Paid Sharing in the U.S. and Implements Measures Against Unauthorized Password Use

After months of anticipation, Netflix has officially announced the implementation of fees for password sharing in the United States. The popular streaming service is acting against users who engage in this practice.

Individuals who share their Netflix passwords with people outside their household will now be required to pay an additional $7.99 USD per month to add an extra user to their account. Netflix recently sent an email to its U.S. subscribers, emphasizing that the account should be used exclusively by the account holder and those residing in the same household. If users wish to continue sharing with someone outside their household, they can either transfer the profile to a new membership or pay the supplementary cost.

It is important to note that paid sharing is not available in all countries, as Netflix gradually rolls out this policy. As part of the crackdown, the company will begin blocking devices after a specific period of time, although this measure does not affect members who use Netflix to access the service. Users subscribed to the ad-supported plan will not have the option to add member. In its Q1 letter to shareholders, Netflix acknowledged that they have observed a certain level of subscription cancellations due to this change. Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix, stated, “It’s very much like a price increase — we see an initial cancel reaction. And then we build out of that, both in terms of membership and revenue, as borrowers sign up for their own Netflix accounts, and existing members purchase the extra member feature for individuals they want to share it with.” Despite initial concerns, Netflix remains confident in sustaining revenue growth.
