Disney’s ‘Tron 2’ Shuts Down Production Amid Actors/Writers Strike

Date:

Disney’s much-anticipated “TRON: Ares” has reached a standstill in Vancouver due to an ongoing strike, resulting in the unfortunate layoff of 150 dedicated crew members.

In a recent Instagram post on August 15th, Joachim Rønning, the accomplished director leading the third installment of the TRON series, shared his sentiments regarding the creative talents involved and provided a status update on the production of TRON 3.

“The most profound moments of my career have been witnessing actors elevate scenes and dialogue on camera. Collaborating with such exceptional talent has been my privilege, and it’s a cornerstone of my passion for filmmaking. However, being an actor or writer often means living as a freelancer, and the constant uncertainty can be challenging for many. It’s not unreasonable to strive for a better safety net,” Rønning expressed.

He continued, “Several of my dearest friends are writers. Every great creation starts with a story – it starts with them. And that journey must persist. This calls for responsible regulation of AI. The threat this technology poses to all creatives is undeniable.”

Rønning then disclosed that the filming of TRON: Ares has been abruptly put on hold, shedding light on the substantial number of crew members adversely affected by the ongoing actors’ strike in Hollywood.

“Today was meant to mark the commencement of principal photography for TRON: Ares (a film that intriguingly delves into the realm of AI and its intersection with humanity). However, we find ourselves at a standstill, with more than a hundred and fifty individuals now facing an uncertain future. The suspension has an indefinite duration, intensifying the challenges for everyone involved.

“The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA, and WGA must engage in unwavering dialogue until resolution. This is the entertainment industry, known for sealing deals over breakfast. Why do we suddenly have abundant time when every day is invaluable? These tactics are exceptionally frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy, enabling us to return to our craft – under conditions that uphold fairness for all,” Rønning emphasized.

The third installment in the beloved science-fiction action series was announced earlier this year in May.

According to the summary posted on the Production List, “TRON: Ares” is set to build upon the legacy of “TRON: Legacy,” immersing fans further into the narrative of Ares. The sequel promises an unparalleled cinematic experience within the TRON universe, featuring state-of-the-art visuals, captivating action sequences, and a profound exploration of Ares’ journey.

Rønning directs from a screenplay by Steven Lisberger, Bonnie MacBird, and Jesse Wigutow.

Russell Allen is joining the executive production team, known for his involvement in “The Little Mermaid” (2023). Leto, Emma Ludbrook, Jeffrey Silver, and Justin Springer are taking on production roles under the Paradox banner for Walt Disney Studios.
