A24 Greenlights Sequel to Supernatural Thriller ‘Talk to Me’

Date:

A24, the renowned film production company, has officially given the green light to create a sequel to the unexpected summer box office hit, “Talk to Me.”

This supernatural thriller has managed to amass an impressive domestic revenue of over $22 million. The upcoming film, titled “Talk 2 Me,” will see the return of the talented directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou. These filmmakers initially gained recognition through a series of dynamic YouTube videos. In scripting the sequel, Danny Philippou collaborates with Bill Hinzman, both of whom were responsible for penning the original film based on an idea conceived by Daley Pearson.

In an exclusive conversation with TheWrap, the Philippou brothers, it is revealed that they are currently deliberating between two creative directions for the sequel. One path involves continuing the journey of some of the beloved characters from the original film, while the other involves exploring an entirely fresh narrative trajectory. Furthermore, the filmmakers shared their meticulous efforts in crafting an extensive “mythology bible.” This compendium delves into the movie’s intricate lore, including the haunted hand’s enigmatic origins. This eerie appendage, which teenagers in the first film utilize to open a portal to a spectral realm, will finally have its origins unveiled.

The success of “Talk to Me” cements its place as the second horror franchise within A24’s catalog of bold and commercially successful independent films. Notably, the preceding year saw the release of Ti West’s “X,” which follows a group of 1970s pornographers meeting their demise at the hands of elderly farmers. This film subsequently inspired the creation of “Pearl,” released in the same year, offering an origin story for the farmers set against the backdrop of World War I. Adding to the anticipation is the upcoming release of “MaXXXine,” a direct sequel to “X” set in the 1980s Los Angeles.

A month ago’s debut of “Talk to Me” marked the second-best wide-release opening in A24’s history, trailing only behind “Hereditary.” Impressively, the film has maintained its position against prominent summer releases such as “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and even Disney’s chilling “Haunted Mansion,” which debuted concurrently with “Talk to Me.”

While specifics regarding the sequel’s plot remain shrouded in secrecy, enthusiasts eagerly anticipate an experience as engaging, inventive, spine-chilling, and dynamic as the original masterpiece.
