Acclaimed Director Quentin Tarantino Announces He Is Preparing to Step Away From Making Movies

After delivering one masterpiece after another, iconic director Quentin Tarantino has announced that he is close to ending his stellar career.

After three great decades of directing films, the filmmaker told Ara he was “prepared to retire.” Tarantino has established himself as a cinematic icon thanks to his classics such as Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Kill Bill. Bolstered by this success, he never stopped talking about the possibility of leaving the film industry. In 2009, Quentin Tarantino publicly announced his retirement plans at 60. Nearly a decade later, in 2020, he confirmed that these were still very much alive and stated he would move on to exploring “novels and cinema literature.” Not only has this made us reflect upon our own goals, but to appreciate the creative genius even more!

Over time, Tarantino made multiple allusions to his retirement. Finally, this March, he declared The Movie Critic will be the crowning finale of his decades-long filmography. When speaking with Ara, he cited that the late film critic Pauline Kael inspired his 2022 novel Cinema Speculation and influenced The Movie Critic. “Yes, it is part of the landscape. The story occurs in a world where Pauline Kael exists and is alluded to, but the film is not about her.” Upon questioning what inspired him to leave the industry, Tarantino plainly stated, “It’s just that I’ve been making movies for 30 years, and I’m ready to quit.” He divulged that he would “very much like” to write more books and even explained, “I want to make a second volume of [Cinema Speculation] that also encompasses the ’70s but with other films, also from my adolescence. And then I will jump to the ’80s and talk about cinema from outside the United States.”
