Disney Pulls ‘Moana’ Costume After People Call the Costume Racist

Date:

Disney is pulling the Moana costume after people complained and called the costume racist.

According to reports, Disney will stop selling a brown-skin costume of Maui from Disney’s Moana on its website and store after several people were offended.

Disney said in a statement that the team behind Moana have taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the feature film and that they regret offending people with the costume saying, “We sincerely apologize.”
The “authentic” costume was described on the Walt Disney Store’s website as including “allover Maui body tattoo screen art,” an “island-style skirt,” “photorealistic teeth art appliqués,” and “padded arms and legs for mighty stature.”

The costume, which cost $65 in total, left many people wondering if the costume was a celebration of the Hawaii culture or just an offensive piece of merchandise.
