Chicago’s film industry is booming. With more and more commercials, TV shows and movies filming in the Midwest, Chicago is slowly becoming one of the biggest film industries in the world. Not to mention, Chicago features some of the biggest TV shows, commercials, and movies filming in the world.

The Chicago Film Office, is the leader behind the city’s effort to bring and enhance the number of movies, TV shows, commercials, and documentaries. For aspiring filmmakers and established producers, Chicago Film Office is the one stop shop for all production needs, which in turn helps provide more and more productions to the city.

It’s no lie that people from all over the world travel to Chicago catch a glimpse of the entertainment industry. With iconic movies and popular TV shows, the city of Chicago benefits in turn with tourism, international business, and promoting Chicago’s unique cultural atmosphere. In fact, Ferris Buellers Day Off and The Blues Brothers, recent productions of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Contagion, The Dark Knight, and Public Enemies as well as numerous television series have all filmed in Chicago which helped Chicago ranked as one of the biggest production centers in the country.

 

According to the Chicago Film Office, in the past forty years, more than 1100 feature films and television productions have shot in Chicago contributing $2 billion in local revenue.

In addition, Chicago attracts hundreds of commercials and photo shoots each year that are produced for both major corporations. This growth industry provides high paying jobs for thousands of Chicagoans and creates opportunities for hundreds of hometown businesses. In fact, Illinois provides a ton of tax incentives for producers interested in filming in Chicago.

Tax Credit Benefits

  • 30% of the qualified Illinois Production Spending.
  • 30% credit on Illinois salaries up to $100,000 per worker.
  • Tax credit can be carried forward 5 years from when originally issued by IFO.
  • The Illinois Film Tax Credit will not sunset until May 2021, and is renewable in 5-year increments, thereafter.
  • Applicants will receive an additional 15% tax credit on salaries of individuals (making at least $1,000 in total wages) that live in an economically disadvantaged area (at least 13.8% unemployment). [Source]

Chicago Fire

Chicago Fire is created by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas and produced by Law & Order creator Dick Wolf, the show follows the lives of the firefighters and paramedics working at the Chicago Fire Department at the firehouse of Engine 51, Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61 and Battalion 25.

Chicago Med

Chicago Med is an upcoming American medical drama television series created by Dick Wolf and Matt Olmstead as a spin-off fromChicago Fire. Chicago Med is described as “an emotional ride through the day-to-day chaos of the city’s most explosive hospital and the courageous team of doctors that holds it together.” It is said to tackle cases inspired by topical events and intertwine with characters from Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

Chicago PD

NBC’s Chicago PD centers on the Intelligence team located at the District 21 of the Chicago Police department. This team fights the city’s major offenses including organized crime, drug trafficking, and high profile murders.

Empire

‘Empire’ centers around a hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment, and the drama among the members of the founders’ family as they fight for control of the company. The hour-long family drama was created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, and stars Terrence Howardand Taraji P. Henson.
